ANOTHER JOURNEY INTO THE HEART OF AMERICA: TOP TEN SONGS: WEEK ENDING FEBRUARY 8TH.

We're studying pop music going back 50 years here, starting with this week's top ten chart from the Billboard Hot 100 and working our way backward through the charts from this week in 2010, 2000, 1990, 1980, and 1970, analyzing each separately. This week my guest is one of my all time besties Elizabeth LeBaron. For 3 years now we have traveled all over this side of the Mississippi playing for anyone that will listen to our band the Dream Eaters. Elizabeth is an amazingly talented musician with a beautiful voice and boundless enthusiasm. She learns her parts at blinding speed, almost in real time. She is a joy to be around, she's a ray of sunshine, unless it's before 1PM. Speaking of the Dream Eaters, we have a "new" album coming out, a compilation of our music from 2015-2020, called, aptly, "2015-2020". Of it we are extremely proud. There's plenty of actual new content and remixes, plus our favorites from our albums, and from our EPs when we...

TOP TEN SONGS: WEEK ENDING FEBRUARY 1

We're studying pop music going back 50 years here, starting with this week's top ten chart from the Billboard Hot 100 and working our way backward through the charts from this week in 2010, 2000, 1990, 1980, and 1970, analyzing each separately. My special guest this week is my tight bro Luke O'Neil. I have given Luke a lot of encouragement about his writing over the years and it is partially because of that encouragement that he has blossomed into a nationally renowned political writer, or maybe solely because of it, who can say. He has written for Esquire, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian and many others. Subscribe to his incredibly excellent, breathless newsletter "Welcome to Hell World" here and prepare to be blasted in the eyeballs with a big load of devastation and despair. He also runs Emo Night at the Sinclair in Harvard Square, and sings sad songs in his band No Hope/No Harm . TOP TEN SONGS FROM THIS WEEK IN 2020 1. THE BOX by Roddy Rich 2. ...

TOP TEN SONGS: WEEK ENDING JANUARY 18

I'm writing a post about Billboard's top ten songs for every week in 2020. And in order to give it a historical perspective, also the top ten from the same week in 1970, 80, 90, 2000, and 2010. One may ask "why not include 1960?" and my reasoning is that it sounds too far out of context, from a wholly different time, almost another planet. What do you think about what I think? What do you think about what I DON'T think? What do you think about what you think when you leave what I think out of the equation? Leave a comment, dummy! (this playlist has every song in the top ten for the first three weeks in January 1970, 80, 90, 2000, 10, and 20. It is organized thusly: First by year, so starting with 1970, then 1980, and so on, and then in alphabetical order by artist name.) (this one is my personal top ten from the all the January top tens. Much consideration is given to variety. If you don't like it make your own and share it with me you sel...

TOP TEN SONGS: WEEK ENDING JANUARY 11

I am going to start writing about the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 charts again, and I imagine there will be much rejoicing. I'll bet people will be excited to hear my many witticisms. I'm also going to compare/contrast the current top ten with the top ten this week in 1970, 80, and 90, in order to give a sense of perspective. You will find that below the current top ten. TOP TEN SONGS FROM THIS WEEK IN 2020 1. CIRCLES by Post Malone 2. MEMORIES by Maroon 5 3. THE BOX by Roddy Rich 4. SOMEONE YOU LOVED by Lewis Capaldi 5. ROXANNE by Arizona Zervas 6. GOOD AS HELL by Lizzo 7. DANCE MONKEY by Tones and I 8. HIGHEST IN THE ROOM by Travis Scott 9. 10,000 HOURS by Dan And Shay With Justin Bieber 10. LOSE YOU TO LOVE ME by Selena Gomez I really like Selena Gomez' angelic LOSE YOU TO LOVE ME. I especially dig the sort of unison choir at the end, it reminds me of Kate Bush. :: Not even a slick, glossy coating of the Biebs can rescue 10,000 HOURS from me...
